UCCJEA

Which state decides your custody case

The Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act (UCCJEA) is the law that decides which state has authority over a child-custody case — usually the child’s “home state,” where the child has lived for the last six months. It exists to stop parents from filing in whichever state they think will favor them, and to make custody orders enforceable across state lines.
